The quote above was made by Rene Descartes of the 17th century.
This well-known philosophical statement asserts that the very act of doubting one’s existence serves as proof of a reality that does exist.
Do you agree?
It is an argument that finds no room for oppositional expression in my opinion.
What it refers to in greater context is that even if something of great supernatural power were to attempt to deceive that which is, it can only do so if there is in fact a ‘'you’' to be deceived in the first place, therefore the ability to doubt or think at all requires a conscious agent.
This understanding raises questions on the idea that any of us are just a simulation.
Even if we are in theory, the fact that the simulation exists as a produce of a creator’s expression must also double back to that which truly exists in the first place.
According to Descartes, this was the ‘unshakeable foundation’ from which all other knowledge is built. That we should be capable thus to draw a clear division between mind and body.
What this reasoning does is underline the difference between sensory experience-what we feel, see, hear, taste, etc, and the fact that the mind can choose to doubt the authenticity of any of those things and the conscious awareness of the thinking process itself.
Of our knowledge of mind, we might divide it into two categories then.
That of one’s own mind
That of the mind of others.
